Once we have made the choice to become spiritually aware, we see our life experiences as stepping stones on our path of conscious evolution. From a state of drifting aimlessly at the mercy of our fate, we get back in the driver’s seat and take the wheel, retrieving our power by taking full responsibility for all that has ‘happened to us’.
Evolution of consciousness is not so much about adding new skills and knowledge to our lives as it is a letting go of what keeps us attached to a specific place and time, which no longer serves us. With each piece of obsolete baggage we throw overboard and each anchor rope we slash, our previously weighed down, sunken boat, bobs more and more to the surface all by itself because upwards is its natural inclination.
The cornerstone to this process is unattachment. For me there is a slight but important difference between unattachment and the more commonly used word ‘detachment’. Detachment may prevent us from entering into an experience fully because everything is observed from a distance whereas unattachment allows us to enjoy the juicy plum, then let go of it to savour the crunchy apple, not wanting it to be the juicy plum as we do when we are attached to the plum. Appreciating each moment with total awareness, not wanting what we don’t have, but appreciating what we do have, we smoothly move through our experiences, clearing the slate after each one to be fully present to the next.
Although practicing being fully in the Now is extremely difficult at first, once mastered even for short periods of time, we realize how draining it is to be elsewhere in time or space. Because we are beings of energy, where we are in our mind is where we are – literally. By observing our thoughts and emotions for even a few minutes, we realize how we are literally all over the place leaving us with only a fragment of ourselves available to the task at hand, doing it little justice.
Appreciation of the moment comes from greater awareness and can be enhanced by an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude is not merely a moral virtue, but a crucial navigation skill to get us to where we want to be. One of our greatest attachments is to a particular mind state, which is so quick to label our experiences as good or bad, yet we have all had ‘bad’ experiences with good outcomes and the other way around. We need to realize that we choose our perception and our perception creates our reality. Practicing gratitude regardless of the pickle our mind may tell us we are in, enables us to quickly extract the learning out of each experience and to let the unhelpful parts go in order to keep moving forward. When you are going through hell, don’t stop! As we keep doing this, we will find that through the principle of resonance, we draw more and more positive experiences into our lives; our boat then obtains more buoyancy and continues to rise toward the surface.
The path of rising to the surface is a process of raising our vibrations, becoming more and more aware on more and more levels. Ever lighter, we move up through the vibrational frequencies, each more encompassing than the last as our consciousness evolves to its full potential, a state known as enlightenment.
